5 types of blacksmith tongs that you can buy here online with Sekao! Here at Sekao Engineering, we care about what we sell. We don’t sell crap (excuse my French) and we test what we sell, ourselves. So, we know what works and what doesn’t.

We go out of our way to find and supply the very best in quality and we then match that quality with the very best in service. Take our tongs for instance. We sell a myriad of blacksmith tongs here at Sekao. So, I thought for this month awesome blogging attempt, I would go over our selection of tongs and their uses.

Firstly though, why do blacksmiths use tongs?

Simpletons answer is so they don’t burn off their hands. But you knew that anyway. But in a furnace, iron can heat up to approximately 1800° F!

Therefore, a blacksmith has to be able to hold the heated metal without seriously causing himself some serious damage. To that end, tongs are the perfect solution. They will give a blacksmith the ability to grip, lift and generally move the red-hot metal around in his forge. Also, this will allow the blacksmith to place the piece he is working on, deep into burning coals so that it can be heated quickly and effectively.

So here are ‘5 types of Blacksmith Tongs’ and what they are used for.

  • The Duckbill – Duckbill tongs have flat jaws and are used for the movement of flat stock. They also come with loop jaws which grasp the flat stock between the two sides of the loop. We only sell the flat ones but ask us and we can try and source them for you.

  • Box jaw tongs – There are plenty of variations of box jaw tongs. These are an ancient tool dating back to the middle ages. They are commonly used in long blade making (swords to you and me). You can hold a heated blade within the box-style grabber, without warping the shape. Which is pretty handy.

  • Rivet tongs – They are so-called because they are normally used for grasping rivets. However, as versatile as ever. They can also be used like pickup tongs (more on these later) to hold punches, chisels, fullers, and such. Riveting!

  • The Pick Up Tongs – The mainstay of blacksmithing and every forge should have some. They do come in different variations and guises. From Single loop to double loop and so on.  And, well, you cannot go wrong if you have a decent pair in your workshop and or forge.

  • Bolt tongs – These tongs have a rounded grabbing point and a stem that allows bars of iron or steel to be clasped, as well as metal with holes,  to be gripped and lifted from the hole
